Ancient Alexandria

331 BC – 7th century AD

At El Anfoushi tombs of the Ptolemaic and early Roman periods were cut into the rock, blending Pharaonic, Greek and Roman art, and at the tip of the peninsula stood the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The Islamic centuries

7th century – 1800

The hill of Kom El Nadura goes back to the Fatimid period; Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi lived in Alexandria in the 13th century; Sultan Qaitbay built his citadel over the Lighthouse’s ruins between 1477 and 1479; and Hajj Ibrahim Terbana built his mosque in 1685.
