The Islamic centuries

7th century – 1800

The hill of Kom El Nadura goes back to the Fatimid period; Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi lived in Alexandria in the 13th century; Sultan Qaitbay built his citadel over the Lighthouse’s ruins between 1477 and 1479; and Hajj Ibrahim Terbana built his mosque in 1685.

Mohamed Ali’s Alexandria and after

1800–1952

Mohamed Ali began Ras El Tin Palace in 1834 and built an observatory on Kom El Nadura; the Anfoushi tombs were found in 1901; the marine institute beside the citadel was founded in 1918; and the Italian community built the monument to Khedive Ismail at El Manshiya in 1933.
