The Anfoushi Tombs

Five rock-cut tombs of the Ptolemaic and early Roman periods, blending Pharaonic, Greek and Roman art, found in 1901.

The story

What sets it apart

Rooms cut into the limestone in the form of an ancient Egyptian house.

  • 1The rock-cut tomb entrances
  • 2The stairs down to them
  • 3The garden and the ancient pieces on show

The district’s page on the governorate portal (2010) says the Anfoushi tombs resemble those of El Shatby, cut in the form of an ancient Egyptian house, but that some were reused in the Roman period and that Pharaonic, Greek and Roman art blend in them.

Arabic Wikipedia says they were discovered in 1901, hold five tombs, and date from the Ptolemaic and early Roman periods.
